Education Minister of Odisha Nityananda Gond: Visionary Leader Driving Inclusive Educational Reforms

Nityananda Gond is the current Education Minister of Odisha and holds a key place in the state’s new education roadmap, especially for school and tribal education. As a cabinet minister, he looks after School & Mass Education as well as departments related to ST & SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare, which makes his role central to inclusive growth in the state’s education sector.

Early life and education
Nityananda Gond was born on 1 June 1978 and hails from Umerkote in Nabarangpur district, a region with a significant tribal population in southern Odisha. He completed his M.A. in History from Berhampur University in 2000 and later obtained an LLB degree from Jeypore Law College in 2003, combining academic training in both humanities and law.

Political journey in Odisha
Gond is an elected Member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Umerkote (ST) constituency, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He took oath as a cabinet minister on 12 June 2024 in the Mohan Charan Majhi–led government, marking his rise from regional politics to a crucial position in state governance.

Portfolios and official responsibilities
As Education Minister of Odisha, Nityananda Gond oversees the Department of School and Mass Education, which manages policies related to primary, upper primary and secondary schools across the state. Simultaneously, he is also in charge of ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare and Social Security & Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, giving him a wide mandate over equity-focused education and welfare schemes.

Vision for school education
Under Gond’s leadership, Odisha’s school education system is being aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including a shift from the traditional 10+2 structure to the 5+3+3+4 model of schooling. His vision emphasizes strengthening foundational learning through kindergarten and “Sishu Vatika” centres, improving teacher availability, and integrating technology for digital learning in classrooms.

Focus on tribal and marginalised students
Because he heads both school education and ST/SC development portfolios, Gond places special focus on educational access for tribal, scheduled caste, minority and backward class students. Initiatives such as hostel facilities, scholarships, and improved welfare support aim to reduce dropout rates and bridge the learning gap between marginalised communities and the rest of the population.

Key schemes and digital initiatives
The Education Minister supports projects like the E‑Shishu system, which uses unique IDs and real-time data to track student enrolment, attendance and dropout trends in government schools. Such digital platforms help the department to target interventions, allocate resources more efficiently and strengthen monitoring of school performance across Odisha.

Challenges and priorities
Despite progress, Gond faces challenges such as high dropout rates in some districts, teacher vacancies, infrastructure gaps and learning outcome disparities between rural and urban areas. Addressing these issues through better planning, filling teacher posts and sustained investment in school infrastructure remains central to his agenda as the Education Minister of Odisha.
