Heavy Rains in J&K: 7 Killed in Reasi, 4 in Ramban

According to officials, new landslides and cloudbursts brought on by the continuous rains pounded most of the Union Territory on Saturday, killing at least 11 people and leaving many more missing in Jammu and Kashmir.

Early on Friday, a landslide in the Reasi district caused a family’s house to fall, killing seven people. On Saturday morning, the bodies of all seven members—including five children, ages 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12—were recovered from the Kaccha house’s debris.

A cloudburst in the upper reaches of Rajgarh caused flash floods in Ramban, killing four people and leaving four more missing. Officials said the rushing waters washed away homes, damaged a number of buildings, and left some entirely washed away. Relief and rescue efforts are underway.

From late August 30 to September 2, the district will have severe to very heavy rain, thundershowers, and violent showers, according to a weather advisory notice issued by the Ramban District Administration. The warning warns of the potential for landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts.

56 people have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir as a result of this week’s floods, landslides, and intense rains; 54 of these deaths have been recorded from the Jammu division, and two from the Kashmir division.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh acknowledged the Ramban event and stated that all aid was being given to those impacted.

“I spoke with DC Ramban Mohammad Alyas Khan just now. Four people were tragically killed in a cloudburst in the Rajgarh area. The search is ongoing for the fifth one, which remains missing. As of right now, no one is hurt. The rescue effort is underway. All available support is being given. In a post on X, Singh stated, “I stay in close communication.”

About 136 kilometers separate Ramban and Srinagar.

A week of intense rain has pounded Jammu and Kashmir, causing rivers to overflow, floodwaters to level everything in their path, and rocks, boulders, and trees to tumble down the hillsides.

The only all-weather route connecting the Valley to the rest of the nation, the 270-kilometer Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, has been closed for the fifth day in a row. Heavy rains and flash floods earlier this week caused landslides between Jakheni and Chenani in the Udhampur district, leaving around 2,000 cars trapped.

Because of erosion and landslides, nine inter-district roads in the Jammu area are also closed. After days of nonstop rain, dozens of communities in Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur are still isolated.

A landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu’s Katra earlier this week claimed 31 lives and left numerous more missing. Parts of the mountainside collapsed, transforming the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on Trikuta hill into a sight of destruction.

Since then, the yatra had been halted.

In Poonch, Kishtwar, Jammu, Ramban, and Udhampur, the weather office has raised its warning to an orange alert for Saturday and Sunday, indicating the possibility of further intense rain.

A special support desk has been established at Jammu Tawi Railway Station in response to the situation brought on by the severe floods, intense rains, and interruption of train services. Officers from the railways, civil administration, and Railway Police (GRP) Jammu are working at the desk. Passengers and pilgrims who are stranded and in need of assistance can either come to the help desk in person or call the help desk at +91 191 2955351.
