Odisha: Man Arrested for Raping Specially-Abled Daughter; Victim Gives Birth

Dhenkanal, Odisha – April 6, 2026: A 59‑year‑old man has been arrested in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district for allegedly sexually assaulting and raping his 21‑year‑old specially‑abled daughter over a prolonged period, society sources and local police said. The incident came to light after the victim was found to be pregnant and later delivered a baby girl at the District Headquarters Hospital in Dhenkanal.

Incident and victim details

The accused, identified as Rahash Sethi, is a resident of a village in Dhenkanal district. The survivor, his biological daughter, is described as differently‑abled, which reportedly made her particularly vulnerable to exploitation within the household. Family members noticed unexplained physical changes and discomfort in the young woman, prompting them to consult doctors.

Medical examination and delivery

The victim was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Dhenkanal, where a medical examination revealed that she was pregnant. After being admitted for observation and care, she gave birth to a baby girl. Hospital authorities and medical staff reportedly informed local police about the case, given the nature of the situation and the vulnerable status of the victim.

Police action and charges

Following the hospital report, police arrested Rahash Sethi and initiated a formal investigation. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including provisions related to rape and sexual assault, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, reflecting the seriousness of the offence and the victim’s condition. The accused has been sent to judicial custody, and investigators are collecting medical records, forensic evidence, and statements from family members and hospital staff.

Public and social reaction

The incident has sparked shock and anger in the local community, with residents and civil‑society groups demanding strict punishment and faster justice for the victim. Activists have highlighted the vulnerability of women and persons with disabilities in domestic settings, calling for better awareness, stricter monitoring of such cases, and stronger support systems for reporting and rehabilitation.

Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing and assured that the survivor and her newborn will receive necessary medical and psychological support.
