Indian equity markets extended their losing streak on Wednesday, with the Nifty 50 falling for a seventh consecutive session, marking its longest losing run in 11 months. The index declined 0.32% to 24,078.30, bringing its total seven-session loss to 2.1%. The Sensex slipped 0.42% to 76,909.68 and has ended lower in six of the past seven sessions, also down 2.1%.
Investor sentiment remained subdued as Brent crude climbed to a three-week high of nearly $92 a barrel amid uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and mixed statements from the US and Iran. Higher long-term bond yields in the US, Germany and Japan further weighed on the attractiveness of emerging-market equities.
Fourteen of the 16 major sectoral indices closed lower. The small-cap and mid-cap indices declined 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively. Financial stocks also weakened, with ICICI Bank and Axis Bank falling 0.7% and 0.6%. In contrast, the IT index gained 0.7%, while Shiprocket surged nearly 48% on its stock market debut.
