CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai is likely to quit the party, claiming he sees “no opportunity or future” left for him there. The development comes nearly a month after the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, where the BJP—re-allied with the AIADMK against Annamalai’s wishes—managed to win just one seat.

Annamalai was recently replaced as state president following demands from AIADMK leadership and did not contest or actively campaign in the 2026 elections. Sources reveal he also turned down a recent offer for a Rajya Sabha seat.

The Next Move: Movement First, Party Later

Rather than launching a political party immediately, sources say the 41-year-old former IPS officer plans to start a grassroots movement to build a volunteer network. This project will likely leverage his existing non-profit leadership initiative, “We The Leaders.” The eventual political outfit is expected to contest upcoming Assembly by-elections in Tamil Nadu to test his independent popularity.

Signs of his widening rift with the central leadership became clear recently when Annamalai publicly criticized the Centre’s premature implementation of the CBSE three-language policy.

From ‘Singham’ to Politician

An engineer and IIM Lucknow alumnus, Annamalai left a high-profile career in the Indian Police Service—where he earned the nickname “Singham”—to join the BJP in 2020. As state chief, he aggressively expanded the party’s visibility and footprint in a state traditionally dominated by Dravidian majors.

En route to Delhi for a crucial meeting with party chief Nitin Nabin, Annamalai briefly told reporters at the Chennai airport, “Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days.” Observers noted that the vehicle he arrived in did not feature a BJP flag, while supporters have already lined Chennai streets with birthday posters reading, “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us.”
