Sensex Falls 600+ Points, Nifty Below 24,150; HDFC Bank, PNB, RIL, L&T in Focus

MUMBAI — The Indian benchmark equity indices witnessed sharp corrections during the afternoon session on Monday, July 20, 2026, snapping their recent winning momentum. A brutal cocktail of disappointing first-quarter corporate earnings from private banking heavyweights and a sudden spike in global crude oil prices sparked intense pan-market selling.

The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex slumped by as much as 783 points intraday to hit a low of 77,368.29. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty 50 tracked the downslide, plunging 192 points to breach the psychological support level, touching an intraday low of 24,135.85 before staging a minor technical recovery.

Global Triggers: Middle East Geopolitics and Soaring Crude

Investor sentiment turned deeply cautious after global crude oil prices surged past $91 per barrel. The oil spike followed strategic, targeted military strikes carried out by the United States against military command centers and drone launch sites in Iran. The escalation stoked severe fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East, leading to risk-off sentiment across emerging markets, including India.

Corporate Earnings in Focus

1. HDFC Bank Leads the Drubbing

The primary culprit behind the market wreckage was the country’s largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank. The stock nose-dived over 5% to hit an intraday low of ₹777.50. While the bank reported a modest 5% year-on-year growth in standalone net profit to ₹19,060 crore for Q1 FY27, investors were spooked by its shrinking Net Interest Margins (NIMs)—which contracted sequentially to 3.26%—along alongside a notable drop in total income.

2. PNB Defies Gravity Post Massive Profits

In stark contrast to the private banking carnage, public sector banks shone brightly. Punjab National Bank (PNB) surged over 5.5% to ₹111.68. Over the weekend, the state-run lender reported a stellar 213% explosion in standalone net profit, reaching ₹5,253 crore for the June quarter. This massive bottom-line expansion, fueled by improved interest income and sharp drops in bad loans, single-handedly kept the Nifty PSU Bank index up by 1.7%.

3. Reliance Industries (RIL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T)

Other heavyweights also recorded heavy volumes during the sell-off:

  • Reliance Industries (RIL): The energy-to-telecom conglomerate traded flat-to-marginally lower at ₹1,321.90, absorbing macro pressures as oil volatility impacted downstream margins.
  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T): The infrastructure giant exhibited minor resilient gains, ticking up 0.54%, supported by domestic capital expenditure optimism, offering a thin silver lining in an otherwise bleeding market.

Sectoral Heatmap

The Nifty Bank index bore the brunt of the market crash, contracting more than 1.5% in early trade, heavily weighed down by HDFC Bank and a 6% crash in Axis Bank. Defensive plays saw a major rotation, with the Nifty Pharma index jumping 1.8% as investors flocked to safer counters like Cipla, Torrent Pharma, and Mankind amidst the geopolitical uncertainty.
