While staff and inmates were celebrating Dussehra, two detainees broke out of the Odisha jail.

Cuttack According to officials on Friday, two undertrial detainees scaled the boundary wall to escape from the high-security Choudwar Circle jail in the Cuttack district of Odisha as the staff and other inmates were enjoying the Dussehra holiday.

Two jail staff members received suspensions for failing to perform their duties.

The two fugitives, Raja Sahani and Madhukanta Kumar, are both from Bihar, and the police have offered a reward of ₹50,000 for any information that leads to their capture.

They were taken into custody in January on suspicion of killing two people and robbing a jewelry store in the Jajpur district.

Director General Susanta Kumar Nath paid a visit to the jail on Thursday night while staff and inmates were celebrating Dussehra, and she examined the conditions that led to the convicts’ escape.

“I have suspended a chief warder and a jail warder on charges of duty negligence, and a case has been filed at the Choudwar police station. The probe has been turned over to DIG Central Range,” Nath informed reporters.

According to Nath, an investigation will be carried out to ascertain whether the escapees received outside assistance or the assistance of jail employees.

Nath discovered that before the inmates scaled the boundary wall, the iron rods of their cells had been cut.

According to a staff member, “they used a blanket as a rope to climb the wall,” and it was thought that the two could escape during the cultural events held on the grounds of Choudwar Jail on Thursday night in honor of Dussehra.

In addition to releasing the photos of the fugitive inmates, the Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police also declared a reward for their capture.

In order to apprehend the inmates, a search has been conducted.
