The Odisha Government observed World Breastfeeding Week 2026 with a state-level programme chaired by Dr. Mrinalini Darswal, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department. Director Monisha Banerjee delivered the welcome address.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Darswal described breast milk as a child’s first vaccine and the most nutritious source of nourishment. She emphasised initiating breastfeeding within one hour of birth, ensuring exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continuing breastfeeding alongside complementary feeding up to two years to support a child’s physical, mental, and cognitive development. She also highlighted the crucial role of fathers and family members in fostering healthy child growth.
Representatives from the Wadhwani Foundation showcased an AI-powered child growth monitoring solution that uses a mobile phone video to measure a child’s weight, height, head circumference, chest circumference, and Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC). Dr. Darswal appreciated the initiative, suggested improvements to enhance its accuracy and usability, and noted that Odisha is among the states selected to pilot the AI-based system.
During the programme, parents of children aged 0–6 years were honoured with nutrition baskets containing fruits and child-care kits to reinforce the importance of proper nutrition and early childhood care. Senior officials and consultants from the department also reaffirmed their commitment to improving maternal and child nutrition through breastfeeding promotion.
World Breastfeeding Week is being observed from August 1 to 7. Marking the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida reiterated the State Government’s commitment to breastfeeding, calling mother’s milk the first shield of protection for a child’s healthy life. She urged families and communities to support mothers, noting that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months lays the foundation for healthier children and a stronger future.
