MUMBAI, August 14, 2026 — In a major boost to India’s defence self-reliance, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and global aerospace company Rolls-Royce have announced their strategic intent to collaborate on the design, development, and manufacturing of a high-thrust indigenous combat aircraft engine.
The proposed partnership is aimed at supporting India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Mk-2 programme, the country’s ambitious fifth-generation stealth fighter initiative.
Building a Sovereign Aerospace Ecosystem
A key focus of the proposed collaboration is the establishment of an “Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex” in India. The facility is envisioned as a Centre of Excellence for advanced propulsion and power technologies, covering the complete aerospace engine lifecycle—from design and testing to manufacturing and long-term support.
By developing these capabilities domestically, the partnership aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission and seeks to reduce India’s dependence on foreign original equipment manufacturers for critical combat aircraft propulsion systems.
Combining Global Expertise with Indian Manufacturing
The proposed partnership brings together complementary strengths. Rolls-Royce contributes more than a century of expertise in advanced propulsion and gas turbine technology, while Reliance Industries brings significant industrial scale, manufacturing capabilities, and experience in executing complex infrastructure projects.
“Our intent with Rolls-Royce is to combine their world-leading expertise in propulsion technology with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing scale, and execution capabilities,” said Anant Ambani, Executive Director at Reliance Industries. He described the initiative as an important step toward creating a sovereign aero-engine ecosystem to support India’s defence ambitions.
Tufan Erginbilgiç, CEO of Rolls-Royce, also highlighted the importance of the proposed collaboration, describing it as a major milestone in building a stronger and more self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in India.
Significance for the AMCA Programme
The AMCA programme is expected to play a crucial role in the future of the Indian Air Force. Initial AMCA prototypes are planned to use the US-supplied GE Aerospace F414-INS6 engine, while the long-term Mk-2 variant is expected to require a more powerful indigenous engine in the 110–130 kN thrust class.
The announcement represents an important development in India’s efforts to build domestic expertise in advanced defence propulsion. It also highlights the growing role of Indian private-sector companies in high-end defence manufacturing and technology partnerships.
Although the current arrangement is described as a “statement of strategic intent,” the proposed collaboration could provide a foundation for broader cooperation in India’s defence and aerospace sector, with potential opportunities extending to civil aviation propulsion in the future.
